Liebster Award

liebster-award

The lovely Maria nominated me for Liebster Award. Am all verklempt.

The Liebster Award is all about connecting and sharing, and I’m good with that. I’ll nominate on Twitter and if you’re happy to play, join in. No obligation, no pressure. 🙂

Random facts about me:

  • Soy sauce on white rice makes me cringe. It’s not the flavour, it’s the concept. I’m pretty relaxed about most things but for some reason, not that.
  • I’ve fostered five rescue pups, all plucked from the pound at a too-young age, and kept two of them.
  • Three pairs of cowboy boots live in my closet, but I have little occasion to wear them in London.
  • I’ve lived in Calgary, Paris, Edmonton, Beijing, Stockholm, Hong Kong, and London, with short but multiple stints in Taipei.
  • My favourite time of the day is early morning when I’m sitting with a coffee in the garden.
  • Ralph Fiennes used to be in my yoga class. It was hard to concentrate when he was there.
  •  My favourite food is Vietnamese pho. Or bun. Or pho. Okay they’re tied for favourite. I like my noodles, what can I say?
  • I make a yummy bao.
  • When I was in high school I used to make collectable jointed teddy bears for sale.
  • Sewing machines scare me, but I can knit a mean sock.
  • I’m an INFP

So onto Maria’s 11 questions:

01) If you could have lived in another decade, which would it have been?

I would have loved to live in Shanghai in the 1920s, but as a person of means. Oh and I would want to leave before the Japanese invaded. Hmmm. Actually you know what, I think I’d much prefer to stay here. The inequality would bother me, both racial and financial, and the impending war would make me seriously anxious. At least here, in this time, we’ve got relative peace, women can vote, and those in the majority have the means and the critical mass to do more and make a difference where equality and peace is lacking.

02) What is your idea of greatest happiness?

A shared smile and jokey insider shorthand with a loved one.

03) If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?

The wind. Ooh the secrets I’d be privy to! And I could stalk my fave celebrity crushes with impunity! LOL

04) How old would you like to be if you didn’t know how old you are? Why?

Twenty-six. All those mistakes to make, life lessons to learn.

05) If happiness was the national currency, what kind of work would make you rich?

Exactly what I’m doing now.

06) If the average human life span was 40 years, how would you live life differently?

Oh boy. Would my emotional maturity grow at the same pace as now or be more concentrated in line with the shorter time span? I would hate to think of my 8 year old self getting up to the shenanigans of my 16 year old self!

07) If you could offer a newborn child only one piece of advice, what would it be?

Make deep and lasting connections with good, loving, and inspiring people.

08) If you knew everyone you know was going to die tomorrow, who would you visit today?

My family. My parents. My besties.

09) What would you like it to say on your tombstone?

Lived. Loved. Laughed.

10) Have you ever seen insanity where you later saw creativity?

Hmm.  I suppose it depends what you mean by insanity. Mental illness, yes for sure. Van Gogh comes to mind.

11) Would you rather be a worried genius or a joyful simpleton?

Joyful simpleton.

Now for my questions to my nominees:

1. What prompted you to begin writing seriously?

2. Who, what, and/or where does your writing inspiration come from?

3. What do you write?

4. How does the time of day affect your writing?

5. What is your favourite writing quote?

6. What are your strengths as a writer?

7. What makes you laugh out loud?

8. Dream cast (include title and logline for your novel)?

9. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

10. Favourite book of all time–one that resonated long after you put it down? Not necessarily one you can read over and over again, but even better if both.

11. Who is your favourite writer and why?
